It is funny, despite not doing much training at the moment, it doesn't mean that life has slowed down. Yes sure, at the moment I am finding that I have a bit more time to spend sitting on the couch, but not very much.
Some of today's business was due to typical Saturday morning running around sort of stuff, but a surprisingly a large part of today's business was due to Triathlon.
The day started with an non routine sort of engagement, voting in the Western Australian Election. Only occurs once every three years, but when it does that isn't much you don't have much choice about it as voting in Australia is compulsory. Not that I actually mind voting. I am a big fan of the democratic process and so am happy to do my bit and contribute to the smooth running of our state and country, whether I agree with the result or not.
Still, voting was one extra thing that we needed to fit into our day. In the end we did it early and got it out of the way. Going early meant that the queues were not large and so it was relatively painless. Plus there were egg and bacon rolls at the polling booth. Win.
After the election was wrapped up it was time for our annual trip to the Cottesloe Sculpture by the Sea. This is an annual outdoor arts exhibition put on for a couple of weeks every year at the scenic Cottesloe Beach.
Our whole family loves going since the adults enjoy seeing the art and the kids enjoy playing with it (the ones they are allowed to at least). One of the great things about this exhibition, other then the visual feast, is that while most of the items are strictly for viewing only, there are always some that are interactive and the kids love them.
Plus, look at those photos. What a magic day. Going to Sculptures by the Sea is a highlight for us every year, and today was no exception.
So what about the triathlon stuff?
Well, for me there was a bit of training this morning. Back on the Kickr for another 70 minute, sub 110bpm spin. Interestingly I was able to hold a bit more power this morning than I did on Thursday for the same heart rate. I don't think that means anything, I just thought it was interesting. I may not be able to work hard, but it doesn't mean I have to stop thinking.
The main triathlon activity though was heading out to Whitfords (at the North end of Perth) to register my wife for her first ever triathlon. As I mentioned yesterday, tomorrow my wife will take part in the SunSmart Women's Tri. So today we were up there collecting race numbers, checking out the transition, finding her rack, having a little swim on the course, all those little things that you would normally do before a race to make sure you are prepared. It was a bit strange not being the one actually doing those things, but at the same time it was kind of cool. It was also very cool watching my wife do them.
In fact watching my wife get into and prepare for this triathlon has been an awesome experience all up. She has really put the effort in. In 10 weeks or so she has gone from almost no exercise to last weekend she rather comfortably made her way through a 300m/7km/3km training tri. I expect that she will waltz through the tri tomorrow with equal ease. I remember swimming with her around New Years for about 200m and having to stop every 30 to 40 metres. Today I watched as she swam off into the ocean for 100m or so before turning around and swimming back. Simply amazing.
I think she has enjoyed the training process too. I remember going through something similar many years ago. That amazing feeling you get as you begin to realise that this thing you thought was impossible actually isn't and your confidence grows, replacing your uncertainty with enjoyment.
Watching my wife go on this little journey has been great to see. Whether tomorrow goes well or not (I am hoping it does) I am really hoping that this last 10 weeks is the start of a long term relationship between my wife and regular exercise.
Bring on tomorrow. I can't wait to be going to a race and seeing it from the other side.
