I would usually ride on a Saturday, but the weather in Perth this week has been pretty wild, with days of rain and strong winds. Today the forecast was for a clearer day, with the rain possibly returning tomorrow. I figured that if it is stormy tomorrow then I can always jump on the trainer, but the chances of me getting out the door for a run is slim. Therefore, I thought I would make the most of the fine weather we had today and go running.
Fingers crossed that the weather tomorrow is good too and I can actually get out on the bike, but if not, then the Kickr is always an option.
With the run, the exploration of limits came about purely due to duration. I headed out with the rather optimistic goal of running easy for 90 minutes. I figured that if I kept the intensity down I should be able to get through the distance. I did, but it wasn't comfortable.
As with swimming yesterday, I had a few moments today where I just wasn't feeling terrific, like I was pushing the envelope just a bit too much and the heart was letting me know. As with swimming yesterday, when I felt that way today I simply stopped and let my heart rate calm down, my heart regain some rhythm. That was usually all it took to get me going again, but it was disconcerting that it was necessary at all. By the last couple of kms I was getting pretty ragged.
With the swim yesterday and the run today, the heart has definitely been a factor, but with the running today I think the fitness played a part too. I haven't done a long run for a couple of weeks and I think I felt that today. Hopefully if I can keep up some sensible, but consistent training for the next little while at least some of the fitness will return. It may not make these runs all magic and back to normal, but some fitness might at least make the experience a bit more pleasant. Hopefully.
Besides getting out for a run, the other thing we did in today's fine weather was get out for a family adventure.
The rain we have had this week really is very unusual for Perth. It is rare that we get sustained rainfall over Summer. As a result of this rain Perth is experience a very unusual phenomenon, our winter creeks are flowing while the weather is warm. Usually by the time these creeks and streams have water in them the weather is too cold to make the most of them.
This afternoon we spent some time (along with a decent percentage of Perth) taking advantage of this phenomenon, heading out to Lesmurdie Falls for some outdoor fun.
Like a lot of people I have memories of this sort of play and outdoor exploring as a kid, so as a parent is always feels great to be able to help your kids build similar memories. I am not too much of a sentimentalist, I know that life for my kids is going to look very different to my life, such is the pace of technology these days. However, sometimes you just can't beat spending time building a dam in a creek out of rocks.
