One of those lovely mornings in the river this morning. I forgot to grab a photo, so you will have to take my word for it, but trust me, superb.
I am currently feeling about 1004% better than I was feeling last week. Over the last few days my state of health has improved and improved to the point that I am feeling pretty normal now. Still the odd cough, but my body is starting to feel good about being itself. My heart rate tracking shows that my resting heart rate took a sudden drop on Saturday, coming down 5 or 6 beats back down into more normal territory. The first time it has ventured there for two weeks. That corresponds nicely with when I started feeling good again. Things are looking up.
The state of looking up, plus a few other factors was why I was in the river this morning rather than the pool. The other big factor was that a friend of mine asked if wanted to go for a swim in the river and I said yes. Hard to just head down to the pool after that.
As alluded to above, the decision to swim in the river did not go unrewarded. When I agreed to swim in the river part of me just assumed that it would be beautifully flat and clear. Not sure why, I guess because it often is in the morning. But then I had a dream last night that the river was really murky (strange topic for a dream I will admit, but I make no apology). That cast a pall of doubt over my swimming adventures and I headed down to the river all atwitter with trepidation. Fortunately it turns out I am not psychic and the river was indeed flat and clear. Lovely.
The river was also nicely warm. Well not warm so much, but not that cold. Warm enough to swim without a wetsuit fairly comfortably. Just great conditions for swimming.
Mostly great conditions. The only wrinkles in the session were that the jellyfish and paddle boarders were both out in great numbers. I was going to say plague proportions but that would have been overstating it. Rather there were just enough of both to make sure you had to keep an eye out. Pleased to say that I did not run into any paddle boarders. I can't say the same about the jellyfish.
Besides the paddle boarders and jellyfish the conditions were so nice that it would have been a pity not to make the most of them so we did just that. Getting in a nice 3000m little session. Considering the recent ill health and interrupted training I was quite happy with how well I got through the 3000m of continuous swimming. Nice little confidence boost and a good bit of confirmation that the body is returning to normal. Slowly but surely.
More training tomorrow and for the first time in two weeks I can't wait.
