Running Man

It had to happen eventually.

I went running today.

This is significant because today was my first run since Ironman WA. I have been letting the legs have a week of recovery post marathon, but today I thought it was time to get them moving again.

I am not entirely sure what I was expecting. I thought I might be a bit stiff and sorry, but I guess deep down I was hoping that the body would be feeling miraculously good and the body would return to running like it had never left.

That is not how it went.

I started the run with the rather lofty ambition of running easy for an hour. Not long in I was wondering if running for 40 minutes would do it. In the end I compromised and ran for 50 minutes, covering a bit of 10km. Yes that is quite slow.

Slow I don't mind, I wasn't going out to break any records. I was deliberately keeping it low intensity and so slow is what I was after. What was a little disappointing is how it felt. Not real great. A lot of stiffness and soreness through the body. I guess it is to be expected, I have been pretty lazy on the recovery front, not stretching nearly as much as I should have been. I guess this is what I get in return. But still, feeling good would have been nice too.

Not that I am worried, like everything else running will return to normal. I guess what it shows me is that Ironman really does knock you around, no matter what you think you might be feeling. Who would have thought that pushing your body for around 9 hours can leave your body feeling a bit shattered. Surprising I know. I guess it might just take a bit more time. As with all these things, slowly, slowly. Give my body the time it needs to recover.

Bicycling in the morning. A bit more of the easy spinning variety. Hopefully that is another thing that is slowly returning to normal.
