Enjoyable family time training?

Is that even a thing?

There are times this holiday where I keep remembering that I haven't had a holiday where I've done nothing in quite a while. In fact, the last holidays I've had for about 3 years have been races, and before that, my son was born, then before that, more races... you get the drift. Today I remembered, and I tried my darndest to make the most of it. Which might explain why I am sitting here writing this at 10:00pm, when I probably should be crawling into bed.

A run this morning, nothing spectacular, but I blame that on substandard sleep due a decision I mentioned last night of camping in our front yard. Turns out that the happy tunes I was singing while writing the blog last night were very much misplaced. We weren't to realise it when we decided to sleep in the tent but as luck would have it the very night we decide to sleep outdoors, a neighbour across the park decided a Thursday night was a good night to have a party and play bass heavy thumping music until 11pm, then have a little singalong till about 1am or so. This wouldn't have been a problem had we been in our nice warm beds, but no, tent walls are only a little bit thicker than paper, and perhaps less sound insulative. Combined with the beautifully temperate weather we've been having during the day, meant it was pretty cold to be lying in an almost paper thin construction, on an air mattress, with a thin sheet between us and the cold outside. Needless to say, not a great night sleep ensued.

The second part of training this afternoon was up at Guilderton. We decided to have a family day trip, while we are all on holiday, to spend the day enjoying the time together up at a favourite get away. So while the kids were playing in the river, I swam 3km in it. Without a wetsuit even! Look at me go. Then I threw my daughter in the river, flew a kite and generally messed about in boats. Way to do a day properly.

This evening it was more mad scrambling around getting the bike ready for tomorrow while we put two very exhausted children to bed. Speaking of which, it might be time to put some very exhausted parents to bed too.

Before I go though I should give a quick shout out to my lovely wife, who in an effort to get me to bed earlier actually wrote most of this blog while pretending to me. Right now I am a strange mix of gratitude for her helping me and offended because she found it so easy to impersonate me. Am I really that transparent? Apparently so.
