Shattered

The Moore River training camp continues today. A bit of a run and a bit of swim on the agenda.

The thing with being up at Moore River with the family is that it is exhausting whether you are doing exercise or not. Doing a bit of training on top of that means that I am fairly shattered now. I have done 29000 steps today, which might mean something to anyone who has a fitness tracker. It isn't the most active day I have ever had (wear a fitness tracker during an Ironman for a truly scary count), but it is enough to tell me I have had a busy day.

The running bit was done this morning and it really went okay. Surprisingly okay in fact. Running up at Moore River is typically a hilly affair which can make the runs a little tough. The only place to get a good uninterrupted stretch of running is the main road from the highway in and out of town. This is 6km long and not one of those kilometres is flat. Either up or down is the norm. This morning's run was no different, with the usual hills plus some rather nasty trails that I thought I would explore. But despite that the running felt good. Reasonable pace and a very moderate heart rate. The heart rate from today's run confirms to me that my heart rate monitor was definitely playing up during my run on Thursday. I have changed the battery since then and certainly on today's run it seemed much better. Today's run was the first in a while that felt in control and comfortable.

For the swim session this afternoon it was time to crank out my Mako B-First wetsuit for the first time in many months. I got the B-First late last year but 70.3 Western Sydney ended up not being wetsuit legal and I haven't had a chance to race since. As a result I haven't had many swims in this wetsuit. Certainly today was my first swim in the wetsuit since my surgery. As a result I took it pretty easy, sticking with 1500m or so, just to give the shoulder a chance to get used to working in a wetsuit again. It all went very smoothly. No undue shoulder strain or anything like that. The swim wasn't all that quick, despite my Garmin telling me I was swimming at 1:05/100m pace (somehow I suspect not), but one thing at a time.

My focus for my time up here is running and swimming (besides relaxing, spending time with family and catching up on sleep). The roads up here are not great and so I didn't bother bringing a bike, but there is plenty of room for the other two disciplines. It will mean that the program this week will be a little disjointed, but it should also mean a couple of good runs and a bunch of open water swimming.

Speaking of catching up on sleep, last night I slept for over 8 hours, which is the first time I have done that in ages. I might have to see if I can crack that PB tonight though. Better get on with it.
