Ugghhh. Was not really feeling like a swim today. Woke up feeling a bit tired and it stayed with me during the day. I suspect I am still catching up on sleep from the Kids and Dads camp a bit. Plus, dare I say it, the solid ride yesterday morning may have taken more out of me than I thought (what's that I hear, the faint echo of my coach saying 'I told you so....'). Anyway, not feeling the love when I headed down the pool this afternoon.
Still, head down I did and the session got done. Today I got to the end with no real shoulder pain. Previously it has been getting achy around 2km, but not today, so that is a big step forward. The session today was a bunch of 100s and doing them gave me a chance to quantify how far I have to go. I would say that at the moment I am about 10 seconds per 100 of top pace. I am hoping that will recover fairly quickly. However, the other factor is endurance. Today's session didn't really show it, but I suspect if I swam a 400 I would be more than 40 seconds of top pace. The endurance just isn't quite there yet.
Another point of interest from today's session was that I spent some time doing some Unco drill. Unco is a tricky one arm drill, but it is great for picking up technique issues on either side of your stroke. If your stroke form and timing aren't in reasonable condition then you will struggle with Unco. Immediately after my surgery, when I couldn't swim with my right arm I did a lot of left arm Unco. So when I did it today my left arm felt pretty good, no real surprise there. However, doing it with my right arm showed me just how out of form I am on that side. The timing is out, the strength, whilst improved, is still not great. My right arm is feeling 100% better than this time last week, but the Unco tonight made me realise that it still has a long way to go. Unco in more ways than one.
The last thing of interest that happened in the pool today is that I nearly ran into a duck. I thought somebody was just swimming down the middle of the lane and had got a bit close, but when I finished the lap I realised that while I was sharing the lane, it was not with a person. Definitely a sign that the seasons have shifted. When the ducks move from the river to the pools you know it is starting to cool down. Still, the sunset tonight reminded me why this is my favourite time of year. Beautiful.
Solid day tomorrow with a trainer session in the morning and a run in the afternoon. Probably better get some sleep.
