Getting on the front foot and writing an early post today. Look at me go.
Back up bike session this morning. Today yesterday mornings session on the Kickr really came home to roost. Effoooort. Crawling out of bed early and getting onto the Kickr required all sorts of mental manipulation. 'Just make a start', 'some time is better that no time'. All that sort of thing. Knowing full well that once I got going I was there for the duration. You would think I would know by now not to listen to myself. Oh well. Got it done, which is very important at the moment as I work on rebuilding.
That is really my big focus at the moment. Consistency. I said yesterday that the return to training isn't hitting me too hard and that is true. But as the training is beginning to bite I keep telling myself to just keep working. I know from past experience that speed will return through steady and consistent work. It won't happen over night and all that. One day you kind of realise that you are running, or riding or swimming quickly and whilst those changes sometimes feel sudden, in reality they are not. They are built on weeks and months of work. The work bit is what I am working on at the moment. That was a big part of what got me on the Kickr this morning.
In the end the Kickr session wasn't too bad either. Power etc was a little down on yesterday, but that is perhaps not surprising given the aforementioned fatigue. I had some intervals to do which hurt rather more than they did yesterday, but the target power levels were managed. Although, thanks to the programmable nature of the Kickr, I guess you don't have a lot of choice about hitting the power levels, you either do it or stop riding. That is one of the things I like about it.
Despite the effort needed to get myself on the Kickr, the actual time on the bike went by smoothly enough. I finally got a chance to watch LA Confidential (well most of it, it is quite a long movie) so that was a win. You know when there is a movie that you have seen bits of here and there and you get to the point where you think you may have seen it, but you haven't really, LA Confidential was like that for me. Good movie, I can see what the fuss was about at the time. Funny watching a movie too where Russell Crowe is young and good looking. You kind of forget that that time existed, a loooong time ago.
Running tonight and once again my goal will be keeping the intensity under control. At the moment the aim for most of my runs is for them to be easy. Just get miles in the legs and build some strength. No trying to do too much too soon and getting hurt. I have to say it is a task at which I am failing spectacularly, but I intend to keep on trying. The time for speed work will come soon enough. Given that I am not feeling super fresh at the moment the lower intensity thing may happen by itself tonight anyway. I also plan on doing a bit of mixed surface stuff tonight to give the legs a bit of a break. Really I am just planning on running around the local oval, but mixed surface sounds much fancier.
Might see if I can fit in the rest of LA Confidential too.
