Finally got around to making an important purchase yesterday afternoon. I went out and bought myself one of these.
This is a transition bag.
Ever since my crash in November last year I have been meaning to go and get one of these. For a long time I have considered them to be a bit unnecessary, instead making do with a range of other bags. However, my view on the usefulness of these bags changed suddenly and dramatically around the end of November last year.
Specifically this bag is an Orca one, but really my desire was to get any bag, I wasn't very bothered as to which one. I got this one through convenience really. I was down at a swimming shop buying dryland stretch cords (more on that in a minute) and saw they had these in stock at a good price and thought why not. Having said that, this does look like a good example of the breed. Nice and big, dedicated areas for your helmet and wetsuit. Looks like it should be big enough to hold a pump. Pretty much a pocket for everything. Also should be good for travelling. I look forward to having a chance to use it.
As I mentioned the real reason I was out shopping yesterday was to get some stretch cords. These are effectively giant rubber bands with handles on the ends. The idea of them is that they provide some resistance for swimming training on land. Basically you tie the strap to something (a pole, or a door will do) and then go through the swim stroke while holding the straps. You work against the stretch of the band, which provides you the resistance. The further you stand from the pole/door, the greater the resistance. I used to use them all the time when I swam as a kid and when I started back swimming last week it dawned on me that they would be useful in my rehab for days when I am not swimming. The ones I got have a medium resistance and so they aren't a huge load, or at least they don't have to be, and so they don't over strain the shoulder, but they will give me a way to do some strength work on the days that I am not at the pool. At the moment I need all the help I can get.
Speaking of being at the pool. I better get on with it.
