Returning

Big news today, today I finally entered a race for 2016. Being recovered enough and having enough of a plan in place to allow me to enter a race with confidence is a big moment. For me it signifies another significant step on my road to recovery.

The race I have entered is the Rottnest Long Course. When the race was moved to May last year I was a bit disappointed. At the time I was planning on doing Vietnam 70.3 and I didn't think it was likely that I would be able to fit both events in. Having won Rottnest in 2015 I have a bit of a soft spot for the event and so it was a pity that I wouldn't be able to return. However, with my injury, plans around races like Vietnam went out the window. There just wasn't enough time to get fit, plus it was going to be a lot of pressure to have my first race back being an international one. So when I started looking for post injury races Rottnest came up again as a very viable option. A little bit later in the year, a lot easier and cheaper to get to and a generally lower pressure event. It lined up as being kind of perfect.

So now the entry is done, the accommodation is booked and all I have to do is overcome the minor challenge of learning to swim again, get fit, get strong and get ready to race. Easy. 7 weeks, plenty of time.

So that is all in the future, in the present I have an interesting day lined up tomorrow. I have mentioned a couple of times that work has been a hectic lately and today was another draining kind of day. I take solace from the fact that it should be getting better over the next week or so. Anyway, given that today was a tough one I gave myself the day to focus on work and moved my planned Kickr session from this evening until tomorrow morning. This means riding in the morning and running in the evening. Not the end of the world since the intent of the run session is for it to be a bit of a back up after the ride. Doing one session in the morning and the other in the afternoon will still have the desired effect. As well as a double session though I also have my final, final appointment with the Doctor. This one should be the all clear. The wound is looking good, everything looks like it has healed nicely and so tomorrow should be the tick of approval. If everything goes well I hoping that tomorrow will be the official end of my injury.

The end of a long road.

    1. I have a Garmin 920XT which I find does everything I need. I don't really use it when riding (other than during races) but it is my go to device for running and if I want to measure a swim.

When it finally dies I would seriously consider a Fenix, but that is just because I think they look better.

I also really like the Vivoactive, but I find it doesn't quite have the capabilities I need, ie it can't pick up a power meter. But if I was just after simple metrics then it would be near the top of my list.
