Fuels

Count down is on now. 8 days to go until plate day. Getting closer. Just enough time for a bit of training.

Speaking of training and things related to it. I had this arrive yesterday.

This is my latest shipment of supplies from Hammer Nutrition. I don't have much call for training nutrition at the moment, but I will shortly.

As you can see it contains the usual array of bars and gels. The bars are actually recovery bars, rather than training energy bars. I got them because everyone knows that it is a good idea to replenish energy and protein immediately after a race, ideally with choc milk or something like that, but that isn't always the easiest thing to do. I have had plenty of races where getting hold of milk, or packing some pre-race, is just not a good idea. I am hoping these bars will mean that I will always have a recovery option available, no matter where the race is.

The other product that arrived is the one on the bottom right. Those are Perpetuem Solids, which are Hammer Nutrition's version of a chewable fuel. The idea is that three of them are about equal to a Gel, plus the all the extra goodness that Perpetuem contains. I first tried chewable tablet type fuel last year on some rides and really liked the ease of access and storage. However, rather than for riding I got these because I am really keen to give them a go as running fuel. I usually take a couple of Gels during the run leg of a Half Ironman, but taking a Gel while running is not the easiest thing and I find that they aren't great on my stomach. Hopefully these will be both easier to eat and digest. Plus, since they contain smaller parcels of fuel they can be taken more continually. I already use with a couple of Hammer Fizz tubes as running sticks when I run and these Solids should fit in those nicely. Not sure how they will work out, but very keen to try it.

The Gels in the photo above deserve a special mention too. Nutella flavour. Enough said really.
