Done

So there we are, all done, the plate is out.

Surgery this morning was nice and early at 8:00am and as far as I am aware it all went smoothly. By 9:30am I was back in my room and by 1:30pm I was heading out the door. I sort of had this fear that once the plate was taken out the ligaments would give way and my shoulder would just collapse. As irrational as that might have been, I couldn't help think of it. However, none of that has happened. Looking at my shoulder it appears to be much the same as normal.

Going by the lack of bumps in my shoulder there is definitely no more steel plate in my shoulder. Unfortunately I forgot to ask if I could keep the plate, although I suspect the answer to that question would have been no. Still it would have been cool. Put it up on the trophy shelf.

I am being careful not to test the shoulder, but straight away you can feel that there is a lot less pain. I can lift my arm with ease, touch the top of my head etc, just like normal. There is still a little bit of pain on movement, but I suspect that is just a bit of trauma from surgery, Hopefully it will fade quickly.

Indicative of the pain expected from this injury I am not on painkillers or antibiotics. Just some anti-inflammatories and even those are only likely to be necessary for a few days. So hopefully the shoulder recovers rapidly.

Still like last time I am under instruction to avoid sweating for a week to protect against infection. Swimming will probably have to wait until the stitches come out on the 22nd of March. Still, all that is just time. The big step has finally been taken. The next step is returning to training properly. A step I am very keen to take.
