Well that is it. The work is now done. Today was my last day of solid training. All that is left now is tapering, packing, travelling and racing.
As it has been for the last few races, the final bit of race prep training was a solid little brick session. 70 minutes on the trainer and then 14km run off it. The legs felt pretty heavy jumping on the bike this morning and stayed that way for most of the session. Getting myself going was a real effort. Given that, I am quite happy with how it went. The bike was just a spin, but the run was nice and solid. I have had faster runs off the bike, but this one wasn't too bad. What was good was the nature of it. I just ran fairly comfortably for most of it, except for a section of pushing in the middle. The reasonable time, combined with the comfy nature of the run and the heavy legs at the start make the session a success in my mind. On top of all that the weather was glorious too. Just the sort of session you want before heading into taper.
Other than the training, the rest of the race preparations are going fine. I am not a nervous traveller, but I am a bit of a stressful one. I like knowing that everything is taken care of and is in its place. Being this way has served me well over the years, since I am yet to turn up to a race and find that I am missing something critical (touch wood). It does mean though that whilst I am not travelling for several days, I do have the overwhelming urge to be packed already. I hate packing last minute, since when things are rushed is when mistakes are made. In reality I have several days to pack, and so have plenty of time, I just have to keep telling myself that. I have got the bike all set up and good to go though, which is probably about the only thing I need to have done at this point.
So for now things are going well. I am about as packed as I need to be. The training is done and has been really encouraging. I am about to head to bed and not set an alarm for the morning. Really all is right in the world.
