I usually try and avoid posts that just recount, blow by blow exactly what we did during a session, since I think they are a little dull. But this morning's session was pretty cool, so I feel I sort of have to.
The whole idea of the session was the Tour de France. As such, the session was divided into 5 'stages'.
Stage 1 was a supposed to be a gentle roll out for the peloton, so it was made up of a steady 4 x 200m. A bit of a parade really.
Stage 2 was a sprinters stage with a couple of climbs. This stage was made up of:
100m steady
400m steady
50m sprint
300m steady
50m sprint
After the sprinters stage we were into the TTs. For our little tour the TT stage was going to have both an individual TT and a Team TT. The individual TT was 700m. Just like on the road we set of in descending order, slowest to quickest (mostly), the idea being to try and catch the person in front. After the ITT and 200m of recovery it was then time for the TTT. This was again 700m, but this time we set off on the toes of the person in front. The idea was that you led the group until you started to fade then you peeled off. In the end it worked out to around 200m each.
Stage 4 was into the foothills. 100m, 200m, 300, 200m, 100m with paddles and pull buoy. Not overly fast, just solid load.
Into Stage 5 and it was time for a mountain top finish. Stage 5 was an 800m effort, however, it wasn't as simple as that. It started off with 400m of solid swimming. After 400m we switched to 200m of breathing every 5 strokes. Then it was 100m of breathing every 6 strokes. The final pinch of the mountain was 100m of bands only and a bit of a sprint to the line.
It really was a bit of fun, whilst also being a solid 5km swim session.
Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to be training with a great squad like Swim Smooth, and then we have sessions like this morning's to remind me.
