Busselton 70.3 - a midnight update

So it is 2:13am the morning after the Busselton70.3. As is often the case after races like this I found myself awake with my brain going over the race so I thought I would get up and do a brief update as to how it went.

I am on my phone so it really will be brief.

Initially I was a bit underwhelmed with my day. Not disappointed, but I had been hoping for quicker. However, talking to Daryl has helped me put the result in perspective and I am much happier with it now.

My result was 4.10:24. That got me 14th in the MPRO category and 18th overall.

That time is a PB for this course, on a day that was not as quick as last year in my opinion (more on that in a minute). In terms of placing my result more or less achieved my goal for the race. As I said above though I had hoped for quicker, particularly on the bike. However, talking to Daryl has helped me realise that each of the legs was executed close to the limit of my current ability. Before the race I had said that if I was able to do that then I would consider the race a success and so I guess I do.

It is nice to come out of a race and just be satisfied. Not every race can be a 'write home to mum' success. But then again the alternative doesn't have to mean it is a crying disappointments either. Sometimes you race sensibly and to plan and you finish with a solid result. It might not be spectacular, but it is reality of racing a lot. That was yesterday for me. Successful in a way.

So about the slower day. In the end the conditions were close to perfect, just not as close to perfect as last year. The general consensus to is that the swim was a little long this year, leading to slower swim times. The air temperature at the start line ended up being close to freezing. Not sure if that made anyone slower but it sure made it more unpleasant and tough to warm up on the bike. I had one friend have to pull out due to hypothermia and I am sure he wasn't alone. Stills very quick day, I just think last year was quicker.

Anyway so that was my Busselton 70.3 in a nutshell. A day to be happy with.

As usual there will be a more detailed race report during the week. For now though I think I should probably go and get a bit more sleep.
