A great solid training session this morning. Really the last big session before Albany and it was a very satisfying one.
The morning started out with a long run. 3 x 5km intervals. It went okay. I won't lie, I would prefer to be running quicker, but the intervals were all under their target times and so I can live with that. I started off feeling a little flat, but improved as the run progressed, although I struggled a little towards the end of the the last interval. By happy accident rather than intent the area I was running was quite similar to the Albany run course (although different to where I ran on Monday). Coastal with lots of small rolling hills. The paths I was using form a really good 5km loop, unfortunately though there was quite a bit of wind this morning, so part of the loop was always into a headwind. Unpleasant (and slow).
The second part of my morning was a swim. The reason I was running along the coast is that some of the Break Your Limits guys (and Dave Glass who I mentioned the other day) had made plans to head down to Coogee Beach for a swim this morning. I thought that if ran at the beach I might be able to join in once my run was done. Which is just how the morning panned out. Coogee Beach was chosen because it is the site of Perth's only shark proof enclosure and it also has really wonderful flat water. Pretty much a great location for open water swimming.
When I say shark enclosure it sort of conjures images of a small netted area, but the reality is much more impressive that than. The enclosed area is 300m long and so really is big enough to be used for a decent open water swim.
Given my run before hand I hadn't intended on having much of a swim. I didn't have a swim on my program after all. Really I was just planning on jumping in and testing out the wetsuit. But the thing with a pool where one length is 300m, it really is very easy to clock up the kms. Almost before I knew it we had done a bit over 3km. Very pleasant, both the conditions and the wetsuit.
The rest of the day has been spent in the traditional Perth Summer activity of hiding from the heat. The forecast for today was 37 degrees, which is a temperature I would prefer not to be running around in. In the end I don't think our area got as hot as that, but it got hot enough. Unfortunately today was just the opening act, with tomorrow forecast to be 41. On the upside though, I am not training tomorrow, with taper week officially starting. So although it may be bone meltingly hot, I won't be exercising in it.
The other up side to not training tomorrow is that I get a sleep in tomorrow, which I am really looking forward to, since I currently seem to be tired and grumpy.
This weekend has been a good one with a couple of proper solid sessions. Confidence building sessions for next weekend. I still have a week of prep to go and whilst this next week is taper, I am hoping that my body will continue to get into race mode more and more.
