Walkies

As alluded to yesterday, I did end up doing a bike/walk brick session today. I tried a little bit of a jog during the walk, but decided that the shin was still a little bit less comfortable than I would like and so chose to err on the side of caution. Still as I said yesterday, I am quite confident that it will come good in a couple of days, since it is already close to pain free.

The bike part of the ride/walk went well. I was frozen with indecision whether to do the session on the trainer or on the road. The road is usually my preference, however, the session is particularly suited to the trainer since it involves a bunch of efforts at a set power level and cadence. Sounds simple enough on the bike, however, as it turns out a cadence of 95rpm (what I was after) seems to fall in a hole in my gearing. I ended up usually hitting 95rpm but being above the power that I was after, or on the power, but under on the cadence. Still I got there in the end, and most of the efforts were about what I was after. I had just been spoilt by the Kickr which allows you to dial in the power you are after down to the watt and then simply concentrate on the cadence. Still I do like being on the road when I can.

The walk bit was good too. Given that I wasn't running, I ended up walking for 20 minutes or so longer than I would have otherwise. It was a warm morning that meant that, despite the lower heart rate, it was still sweaty work. I am always pleasantly surprised by just how hard you can work when you walk. No where near running levels, but enough that I got to the end of the walk feeling tired. Certainly better than nothing.

Off topic for a moment (there's a topic?), as I type this I am listening to my wife on the phone trying to walk her 60+ year old, slightly technophobic mother through the operation of her new iPhone. It is just a little hilarious. I should point out that my wife doesn't, and never has, owned an iPhone. You can probably imagine how the conversation is going.

Back to triathlon. Kind of. Sleep in tomorrow morning. Looking forward to it. I didn't really get a proper solid sleep in last week, so tomorrow's will be particularly sweet. Lovely.
