Hooray 2015. Made it.
I had intended for this post to be a bit of a summary of my thoughts for 2014, but the day has sort of got away from me and now it is late and I am tired, so that might have to wait until tomorrow.
New Year's has been a nice one this time around. True to the form of somebody who trains a lot and has kids I was in bed by about 9:10pm last night. No mad midnight party in this house. Our approach is very much one of, we could stay up, but the kids will be awake at 5:00am anyway, so it is just easier on everyone to get some sleep instead.
Today has been a nice way to spend New Year's day. I have had to keep reminding myself that it isn't Saturday, but other than that it has been good. A bit of training this morning, a relaxing morning with the family and then a fun afternoon spent hanging out with the extended family. A full but relaxing day.
Training this morning was a fairly solid trainer brick. Two hours on the trainer, followed by a 7km run. As I have mentioned before, two hours is about my limit for the trainer. I have done longer, but I don't tend to enjoy it when I do. Even two hours can be a bit of a mental struggle sometimes. One of those times was this morning. Still I had a good session to get through and I find that if you focus on what you are doing rather than how long you have left it helps the time go quicker. Doing that today got me to the end.
Once off the bike it was out onto the run. I wasn't really sure what to expect from this run. I had a target time, which I knew I would match fairly comfortably so I didn't go in with any expectations beyond that. I was very surprised then to find that at the 2km mark I was moving at a good pace and at the 4km mark that pace had been sustained. I slowed a bit in the 6th and 7th km, but all up the time for the 7km was one that I was very happy with. It shows me that my running is in fact travelling better than I thought it was. A nice bit of encouragement as we close in on race week.
Down to the pool in the morning for one of my last swims before the squad returns next week.
