I did some training this morning. Hooray. The training may have only been an easy 60km spin, but I will take it. In the aftermath of this exercise I so far feel fine, no descent into a snivelling, coughing, sore throaty ball. Yet...
My plan for this morning was to head down to meet up with some of the Break Your Limits guys for an easy spin if I felt up for it. Once I woke up this morning I felt like I could definitely manage a ride as long as I was conscious of not pushing it, so that is just what I did. In the end the ride was more of a chat on wheels than an actual ride, but at this stage I think that is exactly what I needed. In fact I think riding with others worked really well because it made me pull back and ride at the pace of the group, rather than going out and pushing it, which is what I tend to default to when I ride alone. Plus it really was very nice having the chance to catch up with everybody and hear all the Ironman WA tales.
So far so good then.
Tomorrow the plan is to head down to the pool and have an easy roll over of the arms. Once again the focus of the session will be on staying well within the limits. No efforts. In fact I suspect the session will be something like a long cruisy warm up and about 1000m of drills. Just get out and get some exercise, it doesn't need to be much at this stage. Plus, I just need to get out and start the process of getting the feel for the water back. I was going to say the slow process, but to be honest it is usually fairly quick, less than a session normally. But whilst it doesn't take long, it still needs to be done.
It isn't every day that you have a genuine reason to do a drill only session. Generally I consider that to not be a great idea. Technique practice is very important, but you will never drill yourself fast. Drills are an important part of a session, but they aren't a session. Except for tomorrow. I enjoy drills, so it is good to have an excuse.
Baby steps at this stage, but at least they are all baby steps in the right direction.
