Perth is a hot city. Well it is in Summer anyway. When you live here you get used to that fact. Despite that though, when a hot day is forecast you still find yourself questioning the accuracy of the forecast. 39 degrees, really... are you sure? Sometimes, like yesterday that questioning is correct, the forecast was for 35 but it never really got up there. Sometimes though, like today, that forecast is bang on.
Days like today you know from early on that the forecast is going to be correct. The day started off pleasant enough, but the big give away of what was in store was the hot, strong north easterly wind that was blowing from early on, sucking the moisture right out you. Just a little message from the weather to let you know that you might be better off making plans to be indoors today.
So yeah, today has been a hot one here. Around 39 degrees by 11:00am. On the whole that seems to have been the peak temperature and most areas of Perth look like they are cooling down now. Although cooling down is a relative term, given that it is still 35 or so outside.
The weather wasn't much of a factor on my ride this morning. Certainly the wind was a bit of a pain, but not as much as I thought it would be. Temperature wise it was still quite pleasant, although, as I said, the wind pulled every drop out of you. That was probably the biggest annoyance, I had a long interval to do and I was getting low on water by about half way through. By the time I finished the effort I was positively droughtish. The first tap I came to after the effort got a thorough working over.
The ride went well I think. I had a bunch of hill repeats and a long effort. For the first time in quite a while I really felt like I nailed both of those sections and still managed to finish the ride feeling not utterly destroyed. It felt good really, I think I could have pushed my average power a little bit more, but I am happy to call the session a success. Things are slowly coming back together.
This afternoon I have a run on the program, but I am currently contemplating re-arranging my running a little bit for the week. This would be partly to avoid the heat today, partly to take advantage of the half day we have at work tomorrow and finally, to give my legs a little bit of recovery time before my next big run. With that in mind, my current thinking is a run tomorrow night and moving my brick session from Thursday morning to Thursday afternoon. That it the plan as it currently stands anyway.
For now though I think I will make the most of being inside an air conditioned building.
