Anyway, the session this morning was a tough one no doubt. Definitely the toughest training session I have today.
A ride/run session, with both bits being pretty demanding in their own rights. Long intervals on the bike and a number of 3km pieces on the run. Just shy of three hours all up.
It went okay.
The ride was solid. It took me a little while to find my legs, but in the end I managed to hold the prescribed power levels for the pieces, so that was good. Very blowy though, which made the ride one of those tail wind/head wind type rides. Either going pretty quick, or pretty slow depending on which direction you where riding. To me it felt like the wind died not long after I finished riding, which is just annoying, but that could just be my perception.
The run was always going to be a solid one as well. As I have mentioned before these long interval runs are pretty tough run when it is done in isolation. Off the bike was probably going to hurt and it did. The intensity was down a little bit on how I would do the session if it was just a run set, but I guess that is not unexpected given it was off the bike. However, I was pleased to see that whilst the session felt less intense than when I did a similar one last week, my times were actually better. It was reassuring to see the improvements are still coming along. The only annoyance was that I had to finish the last km of the last piece uphill (if you are reading this Daryl, that is why that last km is so slow). It was a particularly painful way of finishing the run. But all up I was pleased with how it went.
Looking forward to my afternoon off.
Tomorrow morning I will be heading down to Claremont pool for a 'special' swim set. Due to it being ANZAC dary tomorrow here in Australia, the pool opens a bit later and our usual squad session has been cancelled. To make up for it Paul has put on a special session. Which he promises will be a mixture of our usual Friday session (ie intense) and a Wednesday session (ie long). He has promised somewhere between 5 and 6km. Could be very interesting indeed. By interesting I mean painful.
In other less training related news, this came in the post yesterday.
It is my Ironman All World Athlete reward. It is apparently a luggage tag. Of more interest though was the letter that came with it, saying that as an AWA I will get priority registration etc at races, plus a couple of other little perks. I am not sure what that actually means, if anything, but I guess I will find out at Busso in a couple of weeks. The most interesting thing for me was that since I am a gold AWA, I get early entry into a race of my choice in 2015. That could come in very handy.
Now, if you don't mind I have to go and see a man about an afternoon off...
