Back on the bike this morning. The legs were a little reluctant at first, whinging like a child who doesn't want to eat dinner.
What riding, again???
We had riding yesterday
I tried it yesterday and didn't like it
etc
But once they got going it was okay. Beautiful morning, totally still and a lovely temperature. When I used to row, these were the sorts of mornings that you rowed for. Water like glass, the only ripples from ducks twitching in their dreams.
The only hiccough came when I almost got crushed by a kid driving a Hilux ute who seemed pretty determined to not be stopping at the round about that I was already on. Thankfully as a cyclist you are usually pretty wary of round abouts and this guy had the look of somebody who wasn't really planning on slowing down, so I was going slow enough to give way to him if necessary. He came skidding to a halt anyway, but if he hadn't I still would have been okay. If I hadn't been watching him though and he hadn't skidded to a halt I probably would have been less okay. One of those moments that leaves you breathing deep and shaking your head.
Feeling reasonably okay from the race yesterday. Even when riding this morning the legs didn't feel too bad. My feet are a bit painful due to some blisters that I got, but they should come good in a couple of days. This race was my first chance to break out my Mizuno Mushas in a race environment. They have had a few false starts (they were sitting by the bike at the Geelong 70.3, but just didn't get a shot), so it was good to finally get a chance to use them. Other than the blisters, which were more due to the wet shoes than the fit, the shoes went well. I never felt unsupported or under cushioned and certainly the lighter shoe was very welcome. Looking forward to having more chances to use them now.
After the race yesterday, nobody knew anything about the winner (Ben King), so I did a bit of internet snooping to find out about him. Isn't the internet wonderful, letting you anonymously invade a person's privacy in ways never previously thought of. Anyway turns out he used to be a pro cyclist. I don't feel so bad about being crushed by him on the bike now.
As slick as the race was yesterday, one of the negatives I saw and heard was a bit of aggression out on the course. I had a guy have some words when I got very close to him at one of the bike turn arounds (my defence is that he slowed down more than I was expecting him to) and Ben King said he had a guy push him off the path during the run! I guess with a course that contains numerous laps, there is going to be a lot of interaction between competitors, and so tempers may wear a little thin. But at the same time, we weren't racing for sheep stations, it was just a little club race, so there wasn't really much need for aggro. It was about the only downside to what was otherwise a pretty chilled race.
With my ride this morning training is all done for the day. A bit of a gentle run tomorrow. Today and tomorrow are pretty cruisy sessions to give my body a bit of recovery time. Later in the week the sessions become a little less cruisy. A solid week of training and probably another one next week, before the roll down into Busselton. After yesterday I am looking forward to it now. Such a relief to be training without pain again.
