Well today has not been a good day. In short I had a DNF today.
I can, hand on my heart, honestly say that today has been some of the most unpleasant racing conditions I have ever experienced. Certainly very tough as well, but more than that, just plain miserable. I am yet to speak to anyone who says that they enjoyed the race. Temperatures up to 36 degrees, wind gusts up to 70km/h (yes 70), you get the idea. The temperature was there from word go, already being 30 degrees as we started. Because of the wind, the swim was just epic, swimming through a couple of foot of wind chop. Every leg was just tough.
So, difficult day for everyone really. So what went wrong with my race. I don't really have any excuses over anyone else from the field, other than the cold that I have been getting over.
I was at the doctor yesterday and the upper respirtory tract infection that I have had has been lingering. Both the advice from the doctor and from Daryl was to start the race and see how it goes. If it starts going bad, then stop. By the end of the bike I was definitely feeling like it was going bad.
I am now in the midst of second guessing myself. I was feeling pretty terrbile, but I think most people probably were by that stage. Was I really as bad as I was feeling? If I kept going could I have ended up on the podium etc? All pretty pointless pondering, but I can't really help it. In the end I got myself to the end of the bike and even that was a real struggle. It is easy to think in hindsight that I could have struggled through the 21km run, but at the time, I couldn't see it.
Anyway, some reflection to come I guess.
