Well here we are at the end of 2013. It has been an interesting year for me, both personally and in the world of triathlon.
Personally 2013 has seen the birth of my 2nd child, a new job and a move to Perth. All of which have been pretty major changes. With all of the changes, it took a while, but I managed to settle back into a routine that allowed me to train and compete, something that was far from certain in the first quarter of this year. Despite my initial reservations, the move to Perth has been a change which in the long run will be positive I think.
In the world of triathlon it has been a very big year for me. This year has included my first pay check from triathlon and my first podium in a 70.3. Whilst it wasn't as successful, this year also included my first full Ironman which was a pretty major milestone for me.
Moving away from results this year has also been one of real growth in terms of belief and mentality. I have gained a lot more race experience in the last 12 months and with that race experience has come increased belief in my ability. I have mixed it up at the pointy end of a couple of races and doing that has left me with a determination to do it more.
What is my favourite result from 2013? Well the easy answer would be to say the birth of my son. But if we focus only on triathlon then I think I would probably have to say my 3rd place in Bintan (I think). The top three are definitely Bintan, Mandurah 70.3 and the Albany Half Ironman, but of the three I think I my fondest memories are of Bintan. It was such a tough event and getting through gave me such a big sense of accomplishment. Getting on the podium was the icing on the cake. Plus it was one of the first events I have done that made me truly believe that I could compete with at the top end of the field.
The biggest outcome from 2013 however is the excitement it has given me for what 2014 might hold. I have some big challenges planned, with a busy calender full of tough races and I am very keen to see how they go.
For now though it is New Year's Eve, which means a nice early night so that I can get up and go swimming in the morning.
