A quieter training day today, a bit of a lull before heading back into another heavy training week. The last big week before Mandurah. Last week the focus was riding, this week the focus is running. What does that mean? Well in simple terms, there is going to be lots of it.
But not today. Training today was just a simple spin. In the name of efficiency I do my Monday spin as part of an extended ride into work. The ride into work is 40 minutes anyway, so by making it a bit longer I get to commute and train. Two birds with one stone.
The weather this morning took a turn for the lovely, which is typical after a weekend where it has been borderline unpleasant. So the ride this morning was a rather crowded affair, full of people making the trip into work. Good on them I say.
However, once lots of people start cycling to work in Perth, there is a funny phenomenon that starts developing. I like to call it the The Freeway Criterium. If you are riding into the city in the morning, from anywhere south of the Swan River, there is a fairly good chance you will end up cycling the last 6km or so on the cycleway that runs besides the Kwinana Freeway. As often happens when a lot of people are doing a sporting activity in one place, it soon develops into a bit of a race. It is always very fun to watch. On a morning like this morning there are typically lots of heroes. Just normal guys trundling to work who hit that final 6kms and have the red mist descend. Suddenly they are on the Champs-Elysees for the final time with everything on the line. Groups form up and then fracture as guys jockey for a wheel. I got passed today while I was doing 40km/h. Just quietly I was a little impressed. And happy because it meant I got a draft for for the last km or so into the city. Fun and games. Always an interesting way to finish off a ride.
Tomorrow I say farewell to the bike for the day and pull the running shoes back on.
