This morning things went pretty much to plan and so I successfully completed the longest run I have ever done. The run was 35km and completing it gives me a bit of hope that the marathon at the end of the Busselton Ironman may actually be possible. I was happy with how it went, it was long and I was stuffed at the end, but I got through it. My ITB flared up a bit at around the 25km mark and I had to stop and stretch it at around 27km, but other than that, the pace etc was pretty much what I had been hoping for.
The rest of the day has been spent sitting very still.
If you read my post yesterday, you will have read about the guy who crashed his bike across the road from our house yesterday morning, breaking his collarbone. Well he and his wife swung by earlier today to say thanks to my wife for her help. Very nice of them. Anyway it turns out that he did even more damage than break his collarbone. He also broke a rib and suffered from significant memory loss, ie probably about an hours worth. Pretty significant damage for what at first glance seemed like a pretty minor crash, single bike, no cars etc. Just goes to show that you never can tell when it comes to bike crashes.
After the snapping of my goggle strap yesterday I headed down to Rebel Sport to sort out a new pair. They had a surprisingly wide selection of goggles for a 'generic' sports store. Anyway after much deliberation I ended up just buying a new goggle strap. Very boring of me, but I didn't like any of the goggles that were there more than what I already use. It pretty much came down to a decision of replacing my goggles with exactly the same pair, or replacing the strap. The strap was cheaper. Speaking of cheaper, I was amazed to see that there were goggles that were $70. I reckon these goggles are aimed straight at triathletes and I have to hand it to Speedo for a bit of clever marketing. If you look at these goggles on their website they talk about the optimum drag solution and reducing drag by XX%. This taps straight into the part of the average triathlete's psyche that has them justify the cost of anything if they think it will gain them some speed. Very clever. For me, I am happy to assume that whatever tiny amount of time that might be saved by these goggles probably isn't worth the $55 they cost over what I normally use.
I also grabbed a pair of these:
Finis Agility Paddles
A while ago I was chatting to Paul Newsome at swimming training and he recommended that these paddles would be a good technique tool for my swimming style. They will help me to work on the front end of stroke a bit. I have been keen to try them ever since then. I should get my opportunity on Friday morning. Looking forward to it.
