That is about how I am feeling. Sometimes you wake up in the morning and think, man I am tired and sore, am I sick, or simply conscious. This morning was one of those mornings. In this case door number 1 was correct. I am a bit sick.
For anyone who has read this blog before will know, I tend to be a bit over conservative when it comes to being sick. Everything I have read says that the only thing that has been shown to speed up recovery from a cold is rest. All the pills etc might relieve the symptoms, but when it comes to real recovery, those who rest more get better quicker. Simple enough.
With that in mind, when I feel myself getting sick I usually hit the rest pretty hard in the hope that I can prevent a minor cold becoming a lingering illness. Doing one day of subpar training while sick isn't going to win you the race, but training for two weeks with a lingering cold just might just cost you it.
Unfortunately when you wake up at 4:30 in the morning and you don't feel 100%, it is a bit hard to tell if you are sick, or simply awake at 4:30 in the morning. This morning I was asking myself that question. We have had a bit of a cold pass through our kids, and just the other day my wife and I were discussing that it was amazing that neither of us had got sick. When you have young sick kids, mucus features heavily in your day, so the fact that neither of us had got sick was a bit of a miracle. I am not sure if she started feeling ill right that second, or if it was the next morning. Either way, we spoke too soon. Again.
Anyway, as of yesterday it was my turn. I have been feeling sniffly for about a week, but actually feeling fine when it came to training. That changed yesterday afternoon, when I started to develop a sore throat. The progressed to a full on sore throat this morning, sending me back to bed, rather than down to the pool. I have had the day off work and off training and I am feeling a bit better this afternoon, but certainly not 100%. Missing sessions really bugs me, like it bugs most triathletes, but I know in this case it is for the greater good. I have an easy run on the program in the morning, which I think I might just get up and do. But I will see how I am feeling before I head out. Hopefully another solid night of sleep will set me on the right path.
