This last week of training has been a bit of a lighter one as I have started on my taper, and today I think that really kicked in. I had a couple of sessions today, a long ride this morning and a swim this afternoon and both sessions felt really good.
The riding felt strong and comfortable. I think part of that was at least mental, the weather today was the nicest Saturday we have had in weeks. Dry and clear with light winds. It certainly made getting out and staying out a lot easier. I had a lot of fun this morning messing with cycling packs. I don't think some of them like being passed by a single cyclist. I am working on a theory that the bigger the pack the less they like getting passed. Still if you are out in a big pack riding slowly, then you really only have yourself to blame.
The swim this afternoon was also a good one, I have to say I felt great. We did some sprint 50s just to finish off and I don 't think I have swum that quickly since I was about 17. Although that might not mean much since I am not sure I have done a timed 50 since I was about 17. Still the swimming is feeling pretty good.
Tomorrow the preparations for Bintan get a bit more serious, with activities like packing the bike etc taking place. Everything is coming together in terms of training and I am starting to get excited about this race. I still have a very big question mark over the weather and how it is going to effect me, but I will just have to wait and see once we are there how bad it is. Coming from Darwin gives me some experience of racing in hot and humid conditions, so it isn't as if it will be coming out of the blue. But at the same time coming from Darwin, I know just how bad it can be. If it is bad, then it will just be a case of racing to the conditions, but doing that right can be pretty tough unless you are used to them.
We shall see.
Should be fun though.
