Goldilocks was back at the pool again this morning and I don't mean a blond girl with a thing porridge and vandalism. For those who haven't read every single one of my blog posts, and for others who have and simply repressed the memory, Goldilocks is a swim set that occasionally pops up on Friday's. It looks something like this:
Some 100s
200m - Baby bear
Some more 100s
300m - Mother bear
Some more 100s
400m - Papa bear
The trick is that the 100s and the 200m, 300m and 400m pieces are all done on the same pace. Needless to say that pace isn't slow.
It hurts.
Although this time around I think it hurt a bit less than last time. Last time, by the 400 I was right on the limit and I cracked a bit. This time around I got halfway through the 400 and I thought, you know what, I feel pretty strong. I think the big difference is the Wednesday swim sessions that I have been doing. The Wednesday session really puts sessions like today into perspective. A 400m piece doesn't seem too bad when you have come from a session that regularly includes 1000m pieces (or longer). I have been finding that extra endurance from that session has really been helping as well. Rather than getting to the end of a 3km session and be completely spent, I am finding that after 3km I am still going strong. My swimming has felt like it has been on a bit of a plateau for quite a long time now, but in the last 6 weeks or so it has started feeling pretty good again. I am hoping that manifests itself in the swim leg of Bintan.
Away from the pool, I had to wash my helmet padding the other day. You know when you head out training and you think, 'man, what is that smell' then slowly come to the realistion that it is you. It was one of those moments. I had been noticing the smell of stale sweat for a while, but it took me a while to pinpoint it. I was begining to think that all my riding gear stunk, but no, it was just a single piece. I was pleasantly surprised just how well washing the padding has seemed to work though. Fresh as a daisy. Well close.
