Just when is it okay to blow your nose when riding? An important question which I have had reason to consider over the last few weeks. For those who don't ride, cycling is often a bit of an exercise in decongestion, even more so in cold weather. Certainly for me, snot production goes into overdrive when riding in the cold, and once your nose starts running, you don't have all that many options for getting it clear, other than blowing it.
But what about the scenario when you pass somebody and they then jump on your wheel. Is it necessary for you to ride along sniffing in order to avoid blowing your nose and covering the person behind you in snot. In polite society I would say not covering somebody in snot is just plain good manners. But in this case, you didn't ask the person to ride behind you, should you have to be discomforting yourself in order to give them a free ride. In a pack I usually think it is a good idea to move to the back before clearing your nose. I don't ride in groups that often, but I think that in those situations, blowing your nose while leading is probably frowned upon. I have found from experience as well that it is often a good idea to check that nobody is overtaking you before blowing your nose. That can be unfortunate. I also think it is wise to avoid blowing your nose when getting over taken by a car. I suspect most drivers would take a dim view of you blowing snot all over their car.
Moving on to slightly less disgusting topics, the swim this morning was good. A nice mix of technique and strength work. Claremont pool is also a lovely temperature, which makes getting in just a little bit easier.
On the bike tonight, just a ride, no intervals, hills etc, just plain riding, which is always something I enjoy. Might head down the freeway I think. It will be good to get out and have a spin. Hopefully the weather and the wind agrees with me.
