Best hat in the world

Good solid session this morning after the frustration of yesterday's aborted ride. I had a brick session this morning, in this case a run, ride, run style brick, which went well. Previously, in Darwin, I would also use these brick sessions as a bit of a check for all my race gear, such as race wheels etc. So for this morning's session, it was full dress rehearsal, race wheels, tri suit, the whole bit (no TT helmet though, I don't want to look like a total idiot).

Full Dress Rehearsal

The P5 performed beautifully, full of easy speed. I was a bit hesitant on the race wheels for the first 20 minutes or so of the ride leg, but soon got into the groove and started to feel nice and comfortable. The running felt quite good.

Preparation for the brick session last night was a very frustrating but necessary experience. Call it familiarisation if you will. I was up until midnight getting the race wheels on. In summary, the back brake did not want to release wide enough to accept my wide back wheel. Strangely no such problem on the front wheel. Anyway, I got there in the end and I can honestly say that I can change over my brake pads blindfolded now. So in the end it was a worthwhile exercise. It is better to have this experience now than the day before a race. These are the reasons why we have dress rehearsals I guess.

I have often wondered why they are called a brick and have now heard a couple of explanations, ranging from, 'you stack the legs like a brick', to 'it was developed by a guy whose surname was brick'. I have no idea what is correct, but would quite like to know.

I had a hat and small towel arrive in the mail the other day. Doesn't sound like much, but to me they may well be the best hat and towel ever made.

Best hat and towel in the world
Now, I am not a fool, I can accept that I may have these only because the Aussie Champs were a small event without much depth in the field. But to be perfectly honest, I don't really care. In the end I have these, and if I never achieve another thing in the world of triathlon, I will be able to look back on this hat and towel and feel very proud.

  1. Congratulations on your hat and towel. Don't sell yourself short Derek, you were on fire and they would have been yours regardless of how many more were in the field. You can only race those there on the day!
