A special kind of tired tonight. Just a long day getting towards the end of a long week. It is funny I think of the training I used to do and I am pretty sure I didn't often feel this tired. I guess it just shows that there are other ways to wear yourself out other than riding 200km.
The start of the long day was a nice little tempo session with the Front Runner Team around King's Park. Given that Busso is just over a week away and most of the squad will be on break after that, this session was the last Tempo Thursday session that we are running for the year and as such it was good to have a solid little group ripping it up around the Park. A tough but fair session.
I have to admit King's Park is not an ideal place to be doing a Tempo Bike session, the Park is really one big hill so the guys end up either riding up or down hill, not great when you are trying to maintain a steady race tempo. However, King's Park works well in so many other ways. It is a great place for a squad session as it accommodates a whole range of speeds. It is also painfully convenient for most people. And while the hill makes it hard to maintain a steady tempo. it is also a good chance to practice doing just that. In races it is quite hard to stick to a chosen race intensity if there are hills or variable winds. This session gives the team a chance to practice just that.
Still, when we restart this session in the new year I think we will be trying a few other locations just to keep it fresh.
Back down to Claremont Pool for the Swim Smooth Threshold session to finish off the long week. Like Wednesday this is going to be another tough session, however, I don't think it will be quite as soul destroying as Wednesday. There are certainly a couple more 200s, but they are not the core of the session and so I don't think they should break people too much. The session has a few other tricks obviously, but nothing that the squad can't handle.
This last two weeks of intense coaching has been good, but boy am I looking forward to a bit of a break next week.
Before then. Sleep.
