An interesting little mixed bag of a day today.
The day started out with a rather pleasant ride. As I mentioned the other day, most of my regular riding partners are down in Busselton for the Half Ironman tomorrow and so I was out riding solo today.
The ride started out in spectacular fashion with a rather special sunrise to kick things off.
From there the session went from strength to strength.
Since I was riding solo this morning I thought I might take the chance to get out on the TT bike. I haven't really been feeling like riding the TT bike much lately and so it has it has been months since I last used it. Today though the mood took me and so I dusted of the Ridley and headed out the door.
Riding the TT reminded me just how fast these bikes are. When you haven't ridden a TT for a while you sort of forget just how easily they go fast. This morning I certainly made my reacquaintance. I had a ball. I stayed within my 'steady' limits and everything, but it was a still a very fun way to spend 100km. It definitely won't be another few months until I wheel the Ridley out again.
Besides riding I also spent 2 hours and 23 seconds watching a live feed on Facebook. Can you guess what I was watching?
You guessed it, the Nike attempt at Breaking 2. Like pretty much every other runner in the universe I was a little skeptical of this marathon attempt. Under such a controlled environment, not in a race, was the result truly valid, whatever that result was going to be. It smelled and tasted a lot like a very fancy PR exercise. After all, until Apple came along the goodly people at Nike were the kings of advertising spin.
Watching the attempt though, I couldn't help but be impressed. It most certainly was still an elaborate PR exercise, but that doesn't detract from what they attempted, and very nearly achieved. Sure they didn't actually manage to do a 2 hour marathon, but they got within 23 seconds, which was a lot closer than myself and pretty much every other person I spoke to thought they would. Plus, methinks a 2 hour and 23 second marathon is rather impressive anyway. Kudos where it is due.
Busselton Half Ironman tomorrow morning (and Ironman Australia and Vietnam 70.3). Like I mentioned the other day, part of me will be ignoring the fact that Busso is on and another part of me will be tracking my mates with rapt attention. While it guts me to not be involved, I am looking forward to seeing how everyone goes, hearing the war stories, both good and bad, seeing just who comes out on top and just generally living vicariously through others. I am actually quite keen to see who comes out on top in all this weekend's races, there are some great fields at all the events. Should be a smashing day. The forecast is for sunny and 25 degrees. Perfect.
For me I will be out running in the morning. Running while thinking about Busso.
