Regardless of my injury, the plan had always been for the 70.3 in Penrith to be the last race of the year. In fact it was something that I have been really looking forward to, a good race and then a bit of time off from racing to focus on resting and training. My injury has distracted me a little bit, but it doesn't change the fact that I can now sit back and have a look at a year well spent.
I am planning on going back and looking at the year that was 2015 once we officially get to the end of it. But I thought it couldn't hurt to indulge myself now and have a quick glance back now that the final race is done.
2015 was a year that had a number of monumental happenings for me, some of which have been great and some less so. Those changes have also bought a lot of lessons which I have endeavoured to learn from. In this year:
- I got my professional license and raced my first pro race (plus some others)
- I learnt a lot about how to be a professional triathlete (still lots to go there)
- I got my first Ironman Top 10 result, plus a few more
- I started 8 Half Ironman races (and finished 7 of them), over half the months this year contained a race.
- I went to the Philippines for the first time
- I went to Malaysia for the first time
- I went to Japan for the first time
- I got some sponsors and they have been great
- I met lots and lots of awesome people all over Australia and the world
- I started working part time and have discovered a rather enjoyable work/life/training balance
- I learnt a lot about my heart, what makes it tick and what makes it tick just a little bit wrong. It is an area that I am still learning about
- I think I may have finally learnt to run
- I learnt a lot about ligaments in your shoulder
Sitting here and writing that list I am actually a little blown away by just how much has happened in the last year. It all seems to have been such a blur. The list makes me realise what an amazing year it has been and how fortunate I have been to have lived it. People sometimes ask me why I took my professional license. Well that list is your answer. Without my professional license I wouldn't have been able to do half those things. What a journey this has been. This year has provided me with memories that will be with me for the rest of my life.
Reading that list also makes me very keen to get over this shoulder injury so I can get on with 2016. It may not seem it but the race in Penrith was a real high note for me, lots of things fell into place. I am very keen to take those things and build on them next year.
As good as 2015 has been I am keen to see if 2016 can be even better.
