I often write on this blog about having to be flexible in your training schedule, not getting too frustrated when things don't go to plan, instead being agile and adaptable and working out alternative ways to fit the training in. Today was all about that.
This June has now been one of the wettest months we have had in years. This wet month has meant a lot of rained out sessions, particularly today.
With the nasty weather today I could have done one of a few things. I could have persisted and tried to get my planned session in. This would have been possible, but probably wouldn't have been very fun and I would argue that the quality of the session would have been a little questionable. It can be hard to train to a specific plan when the weather is introducing a lot of variables. Not my preferred option.
Option 2 is that I could have stayed in bed. That would have been very nice and warm I will admit, but from a training perspective it probably isn't the most effective solution. Staying in bed would also have led to a bit of frustration and annoyance for me due to the missed session. Also not a great solution.
The third option, and the one that I ended up doing, was that I modified my training plan a little and ended up having a really good, useful day of training.
My training plan had originally called for training today and a gym session tomorrow morning. However, the weather was horrible today and is looking okay tomorrow. Given the forecast the solution for the training was kind of obvious. Swap the two days. Easy.
Swapping the days allowed me to stay out of the weather this morning with a quality gym session and also allows me to get outdoors and do some decent training on a day where the weather is a lot friendlier (hopefully). For me that was a pretty great solution.
Being adaptable with training doesn't have to be complicated.
