Back on deck today. Well sort of, physically present at least.
Fair to say that the long weekend of camping that I have just got home from was fairly exhausting. Nothing particularly onerous, just the sort of exhaustion that comes from 4 days of full on camping activity, I woke up this morning absolutely shattered.
I had briefly made plans about getting out training this morning, but upon waking up I decided that resting for the morning and getting a good night's sleep might be the smarter course of action. It is hard to judge this sort of fatigue, because you haven't been 'training' and so you feel that you should be out there doing formal exercise, however, there is no denying that the fatigue is very real indeed. Sometimes it is important to listen your body about how it is really feeling, even when on paper it looks like you should probably be feeling okay. Simple assessments of fatigue such as used by TrainingPeaks and Garmin can't account for the tiredness that can come from a few very full on or stressful days, so sometimes you need to look beyond those measures and judge how you really feel.
It is not as if the camping trip was completely exercise free too. I managed to go for an absolutely awesome trail run on Friday. 11km of great single track running with the odd technical climb and descent thrown in, it is just the sort of trail running that I was hoping there would be. The sort of trail run that trail running is all about. I was hoping to get out for another run while I was there, but to be honest the one on Friday took more out of me than I was expecting and so I opted to sit it out. Plus, when you go out camping with the family, sometimes it is nice to simply spend time with said family.
Back to it now though, looking forward to the final push to the final paddle race of the season in two weeks time.
Now, given the topic of this post, I thought would finish with a link to a very good article on recovery put up by the good folks at Front Runner Sports.
