Last squad ride of the year this morning. Quite a lovely morning to be out on the bike.
This bike ride is one of two sessions that I coach each week and, as with the run session that I coach on Thursdays, I always really enjoy the time I get to spend out and about with these athletes. It has been great meeting and getting to know these athletes over the past 6 months or so, helping them train, giving advice and working towards their goals. It has been fun, but also really fulfilling.
Over the course of this season I think this session has formed a nice little core of athletes. Sometimes we only get a couple of people, sometimes we get a few more, but no matter now many we get they have one thing in common, a genuine desire to train and improve. Everybody brings their own motivation and drive which makes training them a real pleasure (not to mention pretty easy). All around great group of people.
Some weeks I love coaching, and other weeks it can be an extra work load that I could do with out. However, every time I coach these sessions in person it reminds me of just what I enjoy about coaching. The people, the chats, the friendships, the learnings, it makes the time commitment all worthwhile.
The squad is on a bit of a break now until the New Year, which will be nice, but I am definitely looking forward to starting again in January and getting on with things.
