Tired again

Another afternoon, another very long day behind me. Nothing exciting on the triathlon or coaching front unfortunately, simply the saga of the house move continuing. Getting a step closer though.

Our main activity for this week is getting our old house on the market for selling, which if all things go to plan, will occur on Wednesday. In order to get there I took today as an annual leave day to give myself time to finish everything off. To say it was a long day would be an understatement. But the upside is that it is now all done, house is ready. Time to wash off the paint and grime, eat some dinner and start relaxing. Probably.

Sitting here feeling rather exhausted I am faced with the conundrum that faces many working athletes. Exercising when all you want to do is sit very still and groan to yourself. Normally on a Monday night I would be doing a strength session once the kids were in bed (ie about now). However, I really am shattered. It would so, so much easier to flag it, go and have a shower and crawl into bed.

What I do next I guess depends on a couple of things. Firstly it depends on what I am training for, and secondly it depends on how important that thing is. If I am training for something and it is really important then I really should find the motivation to get moving. If I have nothing pressing and simply want to do a session for kicks, then perhaps tonight might be a good time to take it easy.

Another way to look at it is to ask what happens if I don't do the session, the repercussion of the one skipped session won't be that significant, it is just one session after all. But the repercussions of this skipped session, added to another skipped session and another etc, well that starts to add up. On the flip side, what are the consequences of me doing the training session. It is likely to be a bit unpleasant as I am pretty tired, but it won't kill me. In fact I will probably feel better by the end. The incremental gain from the session will also help me as an athlete. It does mean getting my exhausted backside off the couch though, which is harder than it sounds, but on balance it would probably be worth the effort.

Generally in these circumstances I view the best thing to do as getting moving and getting the session done. Usually I am training for something and as I have said above, the session is unlikely to actually kill me. I nearly always err on the side of getting the work done, which is exactly what I think I will go and do now.
