But wait I hear you regular readers say, you don't coach on a Monday night.
You would be right oh attentive reader you, I do not normally coach on a Monday night. Tonight was coaching, but not as I know it (see what I did there).
So a night full of firsts tonight, well okay two firsts, but that is still a darn sight more than none. Actually if I think of it there were three firsts, but pretty sure that is the last and final offer.
The first first was that I was coaching on a Monday night. Nothing particularly exceptional to look at there, but I was in the process of counting firsts so I thought I might as well include it.
My second first was that I went to the new Scarborough Beach pool tonight. For those not from Perth Scarborough Beach is one of our more popular local beaches and earlier this year they completed a rather impressive outdoor aquatic center there. I have been hearing all sorts of goodness about this place, but I hadn't actually managed to get there. Until tonight. Yep, it was a pretty darn nice pool, wide lanes, modern facility, beautiful location, lots of things going for it.

I must admit being outdoors next to the beach made for some chilly winds, but that was okay. In Summer I could see it being extra special. I could also see it being extra busy. but for now it was a pretty okay spot.
The third and final first was that tonight I coached a pool swim session all by my lonesome. Feels funny to say it but I haven't actually coached a pool session by myself before. All the work I have done with Swim Smooth has always been with another coach. I have coached open water swims before, but never at a pool. In the end it wasn't that big a deal, I have done a whole bunch of coaching now in many situations and so coaching down the pool went absolutely fine. However, it was funny to realise that I hadn't actually done the solo coaching gig before. Consider that box officially ticked now.
Now that I have got that night of firsts out of the way, there are many other nights like it to come. Well three more to be exact. Steve Gleeson, the Front Runner coach who usually takes these swim sessions is away at the moment, which means for the next two weeks these sessions are all me. Based on tonight I don't think it will be a problem, but it will sure be a new and interesting learning experience and that is always a good thing.
