The big O nine

A bit of a family fun day around our house today, my daughters 9th Birthday.

The birthday has meant that our day has been fairly flat out. Between present giving, kids sport, playing with presents, birthday dinner etc there hasn't been much time for exercise. However, a lesson I learnt years ago is that some things are worth missing training for.

It sounds very self centered (which it is), but most athletes struggle to skip training. A habit of exercise developed over years can be hard to put on pause, no matter what the reason. In many ways you don't really want to pause the habit, because typically you want consistency in your training, you don't want to be stop your training all over the place.

However, some days are worth staying in bed for. Family birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, all those times where you being there is going to help create an important memory are worth being around for. It is only one day after all and you being there is probably a bit more important than what ever session you had planned.

Exercise can be a fairly selfish pursuit sometimes, heading out the door rather than being at home doing chores, helping out or just generally being present. Most athletes can justify the time spent training most of the time, but some days it is harder than others. It is all a question of getting the balance right. Today was one of the days where the justification didn't even come into the equation. Plenty of times of exercise, but today didn't need to be one of them.  Fun was had by all instead.

Absolutely no regrets.
