Race Eve

Very exciting evening for me tonight. Tonight is race eve.

Not race eve for me of course, but for one of my athletes, Ken. Tomorrow will be Ken's first triathlon. He has done numerous duathlons before, but never a triathlon, so I am very excited to see how he goes and I think he is too. I am unsure as to which of us is more excited, but I am happy to consider it a draw.

The race tomorrow is a very low key affair (deliberately) to give Ken a chance to learn the art of triathloning. He has been training well for a couple of months now and we have discussed the race quite a bit, but really there is no substitute for doing, which is exactly what tomorrow is all about. The race is very much a B race for Ken, with his next A race coming up in 5 weeks, so tomorrow there is supposed to be no pressure. Hopefully he can just go out and enjoy himself, learn a bit and have an enjoyable morning out. That is the plan anyway.

The race tomorrow is a sprint, which is the distance that Ken is currently focused on. He may move to Olympic distance next year, but really it will depend on how the body holds up to the sprint training. So far it has been coping very well so it is looking good for next year, but we are taking that one step at a time.

For me tomorrow is quite exciting because it is the first time I have had an athlete racing. I think it will actually be the first time I have gone to watch a triathlon since I have stopped racing, which is a bit strange now that I think of it. However, I don't think it is going to particularly bother me. For me tomorrow is all about Ken.

I can't wait. Hopefully it ends up being the first of many races that I get to enjoy watching as a coach.
