Mega Day

Phew, what a day. I really am exhausted.

Today has been a massive one for coaching. About 7 hours of coaching or so in the end. Rather tiring.

The day started with a mega brick session with the Front Runner Triathlon Team. In fact it was two brick sessions, but we ran it as one giant one.

First up we had people heading off for a 70.3 simulation event for the folks getting ready for Busselton 70.3 in a couple of weeks time. These guys set of on a 1500m/70km/12km triathlon.
.
All up I think this brick went okay. The swim wasn't perfect, with the water being a bit shallow, but other than that, the other legs went pretty smoothly

The point of this session was to really give the 70.3 athletes a chance to really test their race plan, equipment and fitness. In terms of equipment and nutrition there were certainly some learnings to be had, but on the fitness side I think everyone was pretty pleased. By this stage everyone should be well and truly fit enough to complete the race and I think that is what everyone found today.

Some great confidence boosting all around, which is a very valuable thing indeed.

The other brick was a sprint distance brick. This session I ran concurrently with the 70.3 brick, starting one hour later and then going for a shorter duration.

The focus of this shorter brick was all about transitions. The session was made up of a 4km ride and a 1km run done over and over for 70 minutes. The quick guys got through 7 repetitions and the less quick folks got through 5, but no matter how many they did, everyone had a very solid session.

As well as giving everyone a huge workout, this session was also a great chance for everyone to practice their race transitions. Getting them nice and slick.

These guys are heading into the first big Sprint Distance triathlon of the season and so this transition practice is pretty essential. Just like the 70.3 brick, this shorter brick was also a big confidence booster for these guys, showing them that they are fit enough to really give this first Sprint Distance race a good shake.

Besides the mega brick I also had a number of catch ups with athletes today, checking on how they are going with their program, and also chatting about new and exciting challenges.

Between the mega brick and these appointments, it ended up being a really long day of triathloning. Combined with a week of interrupted sleep makes for one very tired triathlon coach tonight. Going to be some serious sleep action going on tonight.

Sounds like something I should be getting on with.
