Unforeseen

A few unforeseen occurrences today.

First up was my trip to the pool this morning.

The plan this morning was to head down and have a swim at Fremantle Pool with some mates as I often to on Sunday morning. Well they swim and I write the program and then float around watch.

However, when we got down the pool it was clear that thing were not like they usually would be. For one the carpark was absolutely overflowing, which is strange for a Sunday. The pool was obviously very busy too. Sure enough as I headed to the entrance of the pool I saw my mates coming out shaking their heads. Apparently there was a carnival on and as a result the pool was shut to general access. Whoops.

No bother, instead we had a rather impromptu open water swim in the river. Well, the guys had a swim and I tagged along on my paddle board, which gave me a very interesting perspective on their swimming. In fact, I have to say that watching people swim from the board was actually a really good way of monitoring a session and watching technique. It was a great chance to get some cool photos for the blog, or at least it would have been if I hadn't forgotten my GoPro. Oh well. Still it was cool to do, and I think it will be something that I do more often.

Unfortunately it is a bit early in the season to do wetsuit free swim in the river and so one of my mates, who has a standard triathlete's amount of fat, was well on his way to hypothermia and so we decided that 30 minutes and 2km was enough swimming for us.

Actually, on a side note it was quite interesting to watch my mate start getting cold, it was very noticeable. Once the cold really set in he lost about 15 seconds per 100m over a stretch of about 400m. His stroke also shortened right up. Clear signs that he was getting dangerously cold. Once we were out of the water he had the standard uncontrollable shivers. I have been in his shoes and I know exactly how it feels. Not very fun. Still it was a great session given its completely unplanned nature.

The other unforeseen occurrence today was on the family side of thing. We headed out this afternoon for a family trip to a historical house when we found, to our surprise, that there was also a local fair on at the same place. What had been planned as a quick trip out to see an interesting old building instead became a several hour visit to a small festival, including music, circus performers, show rides etc. Quite the fun day out. In fact, we are only briefly home before heading back to watch the fireworks display.

Yep, it might have been a day where things didn't quite go to plan, but it was day that awesome fun all the same.

Now, before I finish, a bit of administration. I am heading on a trip for work tomorrow and so I may or may not have much access to the internet over the next few days. If the Internet is not easy then I will be up and running again on Thursday, however, I suspect I may be able to get on a computer between now and then. If I don't though, then enjoy your week and I will be back and typing in a few days.
