Final Kick(r)

More coaching today.

This morning the session for the members of the Front Runners Triathlon Team was that most valuable of bike sessions, an indoor trainer session.

Unfortunately this morning was the last of the squad sessions on the Kickr, with the squad moving to road next week. I say unfortunately because, as regular readers will be aware, I am a huge advocate of the advantages that come from regular Kickr sessions. Over the last few years, as good quality smart trainers have become more accessible, I have come to appreciate how effective an indoor trainer can be for driving improvement on the bike. Sessions can be made super specific and executed to perfection. Sessions on the Kickr can be tailored down to the watt and because there is no coasting, no stop lights, no coffee breaks, the intensity is unrelenting. I have found no more efficient way at increasing cycling power.

So if I am such a big fan, why is today the last of the sessions on the Kickr for the squad. Well, really it is a simple case of market forces, the weather is lovely and people want to be riding on the road so we are not getting great attendance at the Kickr sessions. As a coach, I can recommend people do a session on a trainer, however, if they don't have easy access to one then they are going to go riding on the road, simple as that, and that is exactly what they are doing. With the spring weather in full swing, I can't really blame them.

Still, for those athletes with trainers at home and the will to use them, they will certainly still be seeing Kickr sessions on my programs for some time to come.

Down the pool in the morning for the Friday morning Swim Smooth set. My favourite coaching session of the week. Should be great.
