In threes

I finally made it back down to Claremont Pool to spend some time with Paul Newsome on the Swim Smooth pool deck this morning.

Usually I head down to Swim Smooth of Friday mornings, however, the last couple of Fridays have been a bit crazy, which has meant I haven't made it down to the pool and I have been missing it. For the next few weeks though my coaching load with Front Runner is a bit lighter and so I thought I would take the opportunity to spend some quality time at Claremont Pool, starting today.

Getting down to help out at the pool is one of my favourite sessions of the week. The squad are all great, the atmosphere is fun and the coaching is pretty easy (since Paul does all the work). As a result I have a ball down there. Plus I always learn a whole bunch about coaching and swimming in general. Really it is just an excuse to spend a few hours hanging out with nice folks while they work very hard in the pool and I learn stuff through osmosis..

Working very hard in the pool was certainly on the agenda today, with the session serving up a pretty standard Red Mist set. The session didn't include anything over 600m, but it did include several of those, as well as a flat out 300m effort. Easy it was not. Still, I think the general sentiment was that the session was a good one.

My only low light of the morning came when I was nearly at work and realised that I had dropped my phone in the pool car park. I knew exactly where it must have been because I had been talking to my wife on the phone right up until the moment I jumped in the car. By the time I realised I was nearly at work, but I didn't really have a choice but to turn around and drive straight back. By the time I got back 30 minutes had passed and so I knew there was no chance of the phone still being there, which it wasn't. But to my amazement there were a couple sitting in their car in the car park and when they saw me looking they came up and had my phone. They had been waiting for it to call any minute. I couldn't believe it. Thank goodness for good Samaritans.

This morning I also forgot my shirt for work, and so I spent much of the today waiting for the third bad thing to happen, since everyone says bad things come in threes. So far so good. In fact I think I might just sneak through the rest of the day in one piece. Hopefully.
