For most of the last 7 days Perth has been having Winter proper. Wet, cold, windy the whole shebang. Turns out we have just had the wettest July in years and most of that happened in the last 7 days. It has not been an overly fun time to be outside. Right up until today.
Today the day dawned blue and clear. The winds dropped, the sun shone, the birds sang, the world was a happy place again (albeit a cold one). I always find it funny emerging back out into the world after a week of solid wet weather. It feels like the city is emerging out of a cocoon or something. Waking back up after hibernating for a week to sweep the paths clear of debris and watch the roads dry. I stepped out my front door to do some exercise this morning and it was like stepping out into a world swept clean. That is the thought that always strikes me.
That is the thought that strikes me until tomorrow anyway, which is when the next front is going to hit down and soak us through again. What do you expect, it is winter after all.
As you can imagine, given the break we had in the weather, today was an active day in Perth. It seemed like most of the city was either out riding bikes or mowing their lawn. Or both. For me the day had a two hour paddle on the board and also a bit of a run as well as a bunch of other activities. Both session went well, helped by some absolutely wonderful conditions. The day has been a lovely reminder of what is so nice about winter in Perth, mostly cold, clear days broken by the odd week of wet and rain, just to make us feel like we having winter. Quite a beautiful thing today.
As I have said above, tomorrow we are back into the wind and rain, just to remind us what winter is like for most of the rest of the world, but after that things start to clear up again. Clearing up again is good news because from Tuesday my week starts to include a bit more coaching, with a couple of sessions coming up on Tuesday before some more at the end of the week.
As well as some coaching, I also have my first bit of medical follow up for my heart, a repeat MRI, just to make sure no structural issues developed post surgery. Heart wise things have been feeling pretty good lately, but it will be nice to have some follow up medical review to confirm whether thing are tracking properly.
Should be a busy week.
