The ride was awesome for a number of reasons. For one the weather this morning was truly spectacular, Perth autumn at its best. I will admit it was a bit chillier than it has been, which caught us all a little unaware, but other than that, absolutely without fault. The chilly weather wasn't all bad either as it gave me a chance to roll out my winter gear for the first time this year. Arm warmers, knee warmers, toe warmers, you get the idea, if it was a warmer, then I was wearing it. Possible overkill I hear you mock, well yes perhaps, but I was warm and comfy so I have no regrets.
Riding with the BYL Juniors was fun as usual.
The young folk ride well, but what really impresses me is the running that they do off the bike. We are talking low 3:00/minute 1km efforts, even quicker for the 500m efforts, all for boys and girls in their mid teens. Welcome to the world of ITU indeed.
It was also good to spend more time watching coach Steve Gleeson in action. As I have said before the squad has a great spirit and amazing camaraderie and most of that stems from Steve and the culture of support that he brings with him. He is tough but fair and the squad listens earnestly to every word he says. Triathlon might be a solo sport but the BYL squad is the closest to a team sport I have ever seen it.
As well as being heaps of fun it was also great to get out for a decent length ride that felt good. In the end the ride was around 100km which is the furthest I have ridden in ages. While it was long it was under control and everything felt good. A great way to spend the morning.
Hopefully more of the same tomorrow.
