Another Step

More steps in the right direction today. A bit more training and a bit more feeling better.

Training today was a spot of swimming. Swimming is a session that I have been particularly unsure of because when you have a tight chest and are struggling to breath being surrounded by water is never particularly fun. As it is the session was hardly glorious, but I was happy with how it went.

As luck would have it today's swim was the infamous Goldilocks Set, perhaps one of the few training sessions that I would say I don't particularly like.

4 x 100m
200m
4 x 100m
300m
4 x 100m
400m

All done at the same threshold pace. It is quite a painful way to spend 2100m.

When I saw that Goldilocks was on the agenda, my heart dropped a little. I just didn't think I would be up for it while I was still recovering from this cold. Thankfully this morning Coach Paul gave us a bit more rest between the intervals (it is the first week back after all) so that made the session a little more manageable. On top of that I cut myself some slack and let myself be a bit more off the pace than I normally would. Those factors, combined with the fact that I just didn't feel quite as bad as I expected meant that the session went by quite okay.

As the day has progressed I have continued to feel better and better. I am no longer having to dose myself up to the eyeballs to feel alright. I am still coughing a little, but in most other ways I think I am over the worst of this cold. Hopefully I will be okay to train this afternoon pretty much as normal.

I am feeling well enough that I briefly considered going for a run this afternoon too, but I have decided that in this case caution is the word of the day. The swim went well, but it was a tough session and running too might be a bridge too far. This cold seems to be mostly past, but it still has a bit to go. Plenty of time to train harder once I am well enough. Hopefully very soon.

The other bit of excrement today has to do with exercise, but it has nothing to do with me. Today we picked up this particular bit of fun from Churchill Cycle for my wife's Birthday.

This is a very small Liv Avail from Giant bikes. It is quite cute, but also a very impressive bit of bike. Particularly impressive is the the female specific geometry that is part of the Liv design philosophy. In the end it was this female specific design that convinced us that this was the right bike for her. She hasn't had a new bike for nearly 10 years and so she is really rather chuffed with this new one. We picked it up today and she has already been out for a ride.

Could the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
