Try Again

I knew I couldn't put it off forever and so this morning it was time to make another attempt. It was time to go running!!!

My run on Monday went okay, but it felt far from great. Muscle soreness, some stiffness etc. It wasn't high on my scale of great sessions. I had meant to get out for another run on Friday afternoon, but Christmas sort of got in the way. That got me to this morning.

This morning didn't exactly stand out as a great running morning either if I am honest. I was tired due to a Christmas party induced late night and it was blowing an absolute gale. Not exactly jump out of bed and go running type conditions. It needed to get it done though, leaving running any longer was only going to make the next run a lot more unpleasant. So get it done I did.
It definitely helped a lot that I had organised to meet David Bryant for the run. Knowing I had to get out the door to meet someone really got me going. Running with David had several other benefits too. Firstly David is very good at doing easy runs easy, ie not trying to run too hard when easy is the intention. That was good because it allowed me to keep the run steady and avoid any potential over doing it type injuries. Running with David also meant I had someone to chat to which helped the miles flow by.

In the end the run went okay. The wind was a real pain, but the great thing about headwinds is that they eventually become tail winds and so it wasn't that bad. There were certainly some moments when Dave and I thought we had stopped moving but we got to enjoy the same winds at our backs and so I guess it evens out.

Many muscles felt a bit sore and unloved when I got started, but by around 10km the body was feeling okay(ish). Okay enough to know that I will be good to run throughout this coming week.

In the end we got through a nice comfy 16km. A very reassuring little session, letting me know that my body and my fitness are still in an okay place and that things are all good for when training gets going again.

The other bit of training for the day was a swim in the river. In this session the wind that made the run unpleasant made the swim almost unbearable. For half the swim I am pretty sure we were fighting the tide and wind induced chop, it was right down the unpleasant end of the scale.

When you are training for a race it is sometimes good to get out and do a few uncomfortable, rough swims. It can be good preparation for the eventuality of a rough swim. When you are not training for a race though sometimes all you want is a nice morning out swimming, rather than going out and have a session of simulated drowning. A nice morning out swimming is not what we got today. Glad we got the session done, but I am now planning on promptly forgetting it and never mentioning it again. Blerch.

Other than a bit of training, the major activities of this weekend have been Christmas parties. Three of them this weekend for me. Really that should be the bulk of them, only really family affairs to come from here on in. Lots of fun and catching up, but also lots of food and also a fair chunk of the weekend. Good to do, but I am looking forward to a slightly slower week leading into Christmas, relaxing and getting in some training.
