I consider myself a bit of a movie fan. I am not too fussy about the genre, more the medium I am a fan of. If the movie is good, I will enjoy it. I am definitely not a movie snob, there are plenty of genres that are perhaps not the most critically acclaimed, but I am more than happy to watch and enjoy.
Super hero movies are one of those genres.
Now don't get me wrong, not all super hero movies, there are some truly terrible ones out there. And not under all circumstances either. But one scenario that is particularly well suited to a good super hero movie is riding on a wind trainer.
I have spent an awful lot of time on my Kickr recently and that has given me a lot of time to think about wind trainer movies. I think that finding a good wind trainer movie is a bit of an art. I can't be too involved, or too dull. There are plenty of compelling, critically acclaimed movies that just don't work on the trainer, they need to much thinking. Wind trainer movies have to keep moving too so that you aren't slogging through flat spots. They can't be too short or too long either, ideally one that finishes the same time as your session is perfect.
These criteria are why super hero movies are perfect candidates for wind trainer entertainment. Super hero movies, like most good action movies, don't require a lot of thought. Miss a bit of dialogue, probably not that important. Same goes for plot points. Some super hero movies only have the vaguest attempt at a plot anyway, so with them you don't even have to try and follow the story. Just sit back and enjoy the ride, while you ride.
What they might be lacking in script and plot they often make up for in explosions, chases and fight scenes. These things aren't typically the formula for a compelling movie (although they may be the formula for a commercially successful one), but they do make for a great wind trainer movie.
None of that quiet down time at the beginning while you wait for characters and story to develop, often they just go straight into the action. If you pick the movie right you can even get away with having no quiet downtime in the middle to develop a source of conflict, just keep rolling straight on with the action. They are typically a good length too. A long super hero movie might stretch to a couple of hours. Very rarely do they go over that. Just the time you need to be on a trainer without bringing on insanity. Perfect.
Definitely not a bad way to go if you find yourself stuck indoors.
Which, as you may have guessed, I was this morning. Back on the Kickr again. Just an easy spin this morning though after a solid day of training yesterday. Enough time for a good fight scene or two though, perhaps a chase.
Back on the trainer again in the morning. This one will be a bit of a longer session, might need more than a super hero movie to get through.
